Hello and welcome to my website.

Thanks for stopping by. A little about me.

My artistic journey began in childhood, capturing the beauty of winter trees during a third-grade art class. My mother was also an artist and she delighted in my creations and encouraged me making sure I had art supplies but often my creative pursuits were crafted from found object I remember using to create mosaics particularly from iridescence or foiled paper candy wrappers.

University expanded my horizons, introducing me to black and white photography and the fine art of film development. I eventually fused the photography with encaustic wax using vintage postcards and photographs, inspired by Jasper Johns' "Numbers in Color," and became a pivotal exploration in my artistic evolution.

My studio is a vibrant space for oil painting, encaustic techniques, and watercolor, with art reflecting nature and sometimes mythology, particularly mermaids which features unique mono-prints that blend color and texture. My works showcase my love of layering and experimentation with shape, repetition and texture. My compositions are often an expression of my interest in color and how it sets the tone in a painting. As an artist and teacher, I explore and experiment with a wide range of media from watercolor, pastels, oil & acrylic to Encaustic wax.

Watercolor

One of the artistic mediums I find to be a constant companion is watercolors. I am particularly drawn to the translucent quality of watercolors. I carrying a small watercolor kit with me whenever I travel as it allows me to seize the inspiration that presents itself along the way. Also a lightweight digital camera (cell phone works great) to capture those fleeting and beautiful moments, which I can later use as references for my studio paintings.

If you’d like to create a small watercolor kit, like the one shown below, follow this link to instructions in my blog.

Encaustics

The encaustic hot wax process is a spontaneous medium where hot wax is applied to gesso wood panels. It is typically layered to create more opaque, or more translucent effects, and can be combined with colored wax or collage materials (like photos or paper). Each layer of wax can also be scraped, textured or polished for a variety of finishes.

After taking a workshop in encaustic wax, I became very interested in how I could use encaustic wax and photography. I set about practicing my new found skills melting bees wax and happily enjoying the warmth it creating in the studio during our long cold winter days - and, the bonus is the sweet honey smell that also permeates the space.
