Hello and welcome to my website. I began my artistic journey in childhood capturing the beauty of winter trees during a third-grade art class. Encouraged at home, I delved into creative pursuits, crafting mosaics from found objects, and remember being particularly enamored with the iridescence of foiled paper candy wrappers. (I still light shinny objects). University expanded my horizons, introducing me to black and white photography and the fine art of film development and lab printing. During this exploration I discovered encaustic wax art and began the fusion of wax and vintage postcards and photographs.

My artistic pursuits are marked by a willingness to explore diverse mediums, from oil painting to watercolor and acrylics, resulting in a diverse portfolio characterized by a strong graphic sensibility. Thank you for visiting my website, and feel free to explore my creations on Pinterest (Loreen Pitchford Art), Instagram (Pitchford.Art.Studio), and Etsy (Pitchford Art Studio for watercolor prints). Thanks for stoping by and feel free to comment.

Watercolors

I like to carry a small watercolor kit with me when I travel as well as lightweight digital camera to capture those fleeting moments for use in studio paintings. I love the translucent qualities of watercolor and appreciate the easy cleanup!

Encaustics

The encaustic hot wax process is a spontaneous medium where hot wax is applied to gesso wood panels. It is typically layered to create more opaque, or more translucent effects, and can be combined with colored wax or collage materials (like photos or paper). Each layer of wax can also be scraped, textured or polished for a variety of finishes.

After taking a workshop in encaustic wax, I became very interested in how I could use encaustic wax and photography. I set about practicing my new found skills melting bees wax and happily enjoying the warmth it creating in the studio during our long cold winter days - and, the bonus is the sweet honey smell that also permeates the space. One of the mediums I find a constant companion is watercolors. I like to carry a small kit with me when I travel and seem to always find something that inspires me along with a lightweight digital camera to capture those fleeting moments for use in studio paintings. I love the translucent qualities of watercolor and also appreciate that the cleanup is a breeze!
